How to properly choose the components to assemble a custom arrow for a bow?

If you are already an experienced archer or want to assemble your own arrows, you must consider all the necessary components for assembling the arrow (shaft, fletchings, nock, point, and insert if required). Additionally, to assemble the arrows, you will need a fletching jig, glue, and wax for points and inserts. If you need to cut the arrow shaft to fit your personal draw length, a tube cutter and a draw length arrow will also be required to measure your draw length if you don’t already know it.

If you don’t have a workshop or tools for assembling arrows, a good option is to order custom arrows with the components you desire through the archery workshop service we offer at the store. We can cut the shaft to the required length, attach the point or insert (if applicable), fletch the arrows, and mount the nock.

The common parts for assembling custom arrows are:

  • Types of Arrow Shafts

When choosing arrow shafts (carbon, aluminum, or carbon/aluminum), you need to consider the spine or stiffness, also known as the shaft’s caliber. Each model or brand of shaft has its own points, inserts, and nocks suitable for the diameter and characteristics of the shaft. In the case of wooden shafts, besides the stiffness, the shaft’s diameter is measured (usually 5/16” or 11/32”). There is no standard between shafts from different brands, but sometimes we can find shafts with the same diameter.

  • Types of Fletchings for Arrows

The types of natural or synthetic fletchings for arrows can vary in color, length (in inches), and profile (parabolic or shield). Natural fletchings are made using treated and painted natural feathers. Natural fletchings are typically used with traditional bows like the Mongolian bow, longbow, and other traditional bows. In contrast, synthetic fletchings are used with more modern bows such as the Olympic recurve bow, compound bow, and other bows like those for beginners or recreational use.

  • Types of Nocks for Arrows

The nocks will correspond to the diameter of the shaft, and each model or brand of shaft will require specific nocks. There is only one standard, which is the nock’s groove that is used to attach it to the bowstring. This can come in two sizes, 0.88 and 1, depending on the thickness of the bowstring we are using.

In some cases, an insert or nock insert will be additionally used, which makes it easier to exchange nocks that accommodate different sizes for the nock groove.

There are also illuminated nocks used in night hunting, which are characterized by emitting light with an LED to help locate them more easily in the dark.

  • Types of Points for Arrows

The types of points available are precision points, designed for use in target or recreational archery, and hunting points, specifically designed to take down different types of game. We can find points that require an insert or not. For example, hunting points have a 5/16” thread, so an insert for the shaft will be necessary.

Arrow points differ, apart from their shape, by their weight in grains. Common weights include 80gr, 90gr, 100gr, 110gr, and 125gr, typically for both precision and hunting points. The weight of the arrow will affect the shot. Depending on the point, the flight and trajectory of the arrow will be influenced. Points with threads will require an appropriate insert for the arrow shaft being used.
