How to Choose a Bow and Arrows to Buy?
The common questions that every archer starting out in archery and looking to buy a bow have are:
- What type of bow and arrows should I choose?
It depends on the type of archery discipline you want to practice: Olympic recurve bow, compound bow for hunting or target shooting, traditional archery (recurve, longbow, or Asian style), or beginner or recreational bows. The arrows (shaft, feathers, points, and nock) largely depend on the archery discipline we wish to practice.

- What do I need to know to buy a bow?
To buy a bow, you need to know two things initially: the bow length you need (only for beginner or Olympic recurve bows) and the appropriate draw weight for you. If you need a compound bow, you should know your draw length. The bow length relates to the type of bow:
- Traditional recurve, short, and longbows: They have their own specific size. You just need to know the appropriate draw weight for comfortable shooting.
- Beginner or Olympic recurve bows: You need to know the bow length based on your draw length and the appropriate draw weight for you.
- Compound bows: You need to know the appropriate draw weight and draw length for you.
- How to determine my recommended draw weight and draw length for buying a bow and arrows?
- The recommended draw weight for shooting a bow is: For recurve, traditional, and longbows, the recommended draw weight for beginners ranges from 22 to 26 pounds for adults. If you are stronger or weaker, you can add or subtract 2 to 4 pounds from that initial range. If you’re an experienced archer and want to switch to a higher draw weight, you can increase by 4 to 5 pounds compared to your old limbs.
- The draw length can be measured using the following method: With your arms extended in a “T” shape, measure from fingertip to fingertip. Divide this measurement by 2.5, then convert the result to inches. This is your recommended draw length. You can also use a draw length measuring arrow.
- Table for recommended bow lengths for beginner recurve bows (ILF or T/D) and longbows based on the archer’s draw length:
Recommended recurve bow length based on draw length:
24″ draw for 58″ bow length | 25″ draw for 60″ bow length | 26″ draw for 62″ bow length | 27″ draw for 64″ bow length | 28″ draw for 66″ bow length | 29″ draw for 68″ bow length | 30″ draw for 70″ bow length | 31″ draw for 72″ bow length
Recommended longbow length based on draw length:
24″ draw for 56″ bow length | 25″ draw for 58″ bow length | 26″ draw for 60″ bow length | 27″ draw for 62″ bow length | 28″ draw for 64″ bow length | 29″ draw for 66″ bow length | 30″ draw for 68″ bow length | 31″ draw for 70″ bow length
- How to choose the right arrows for a bow?
To buy the right arrows for a bow, we need to know the type of arrow desired (shaft material, feather type, nock, and point type) as well as the stiffness of the shaft in relation to the bow’s draw weight. Lastly, knowing the bow’s draw length, which correlates with the length of your arms, is important, although this is not critical for beginner archery. The simplest way is to buy complete or pre-assembled arrows that suit your preferences and have the appropriate stiffness for your bow.
- What basic equipment is necessary to practice archery?
The essential equipment you need to practice archery includes a bow and arrows, an arm guard, a finger tab, a target stand with a target to shoot at and prevent breaking arrows, a bowstring, a quiver for arrows, a bow stringer, a bow stand, and a backpack with an extendable tube to store everything.
If you’re looking for a complete bow kit, depending on the archery discipline you practice, you may need: a sight, a stabilizer with weights and dampers, silencers, and other bow accessories that help improve aiming and the bow’s and arrow’s performance.

- Olympic Recurve Bow
The Olympic recurve bow is the premier form of competitive archery in the Olympics and other major events. Recurve bows are made with metal or carbon bodies, fiberglass limbs, and include accessories such as sights, stabilizers, clickers, weights, dampers, etc., to enhance and optimize arrow shooting. Archery can also be practiced without accessories, or intuitively, using a bare recurve bow, where the shot is completely instinctive.

Traditional Bows
Monoblock Traditional Bow or Detachable Traditional Bow.
A traditional bow is a wooden bow, made or inspired by the designs of historical or traditional bows. They can be a single piece (monoblock) or consist of a body and limbs (detachable).Traditional Longbow.
The traditional longbow is a long bow that originates from medieval England and is characterized by being longer than any other bow.Traditional Asian Bow.
Traditional Asian bows are generally short bows that can be used in archery both on foot and on horseback, such as Mongolian bows.Traditional Recurve Bow.
The traditional recurve bow is a very popular type of wooden recurve bow, named for its double “S” shape, which helps increase the bow’s power. It can be found in two formats: Monoblock and Detachable with ILF or T/D type anchor, although there are other types of anchoring to assemble the bow (body and limbs).
What types of arrows are suitable for my bow if I buy a complete arrow?

To know how to choose the right arrow for our bow, we should consider:
- Type of archery activity or discipline we will be practicing to determine the most suitable materials and components for the arrow (shaft, nock, feathers, and points).
- It is very important to know the draw weight of our bow to choose the appropriate stiffness of the shaft. Note: Never shoot with arrows that have a lower stiffness than recommended for the bow’s draw weight.
- For experienced archers, it’s also necessary to know your draw length to determine the arrow’s length. This draw length relates to the body’s dimensions and can be measured with a special arrow designed for measuring draw length, or by using the method described earlier.
The most recommended and cost-effective option is to buy complete arrows, already assembled. You can find different arrows for different uses (from traditional to compound bows and hunting) with the appropriate stiffness for each bow’s draw weight.
Types of complete arrows:
- Beginner Arrows: These arrows are for starting archery with beginner or recreational bows. They are low-power bows and typically have carbon shafts with artificial feathers. The nock and point are usually simple, with an insert already included in the nock and point shape.
- Natural Feather Arrows: These arrows have carbon shafts or wooden shafts and come with natural feathers. They are commonly used with traditional bows. If using a wooden shaft, the nocks and points will be specially designed for those shafts.
- Artificial Feather Arrows: These arrows have carbon or aluminum shafts with artificial feathers. They can be used with Olympic recurve bows, compound bows, and others.
- Custom Arrows: These are custom-made arrows tailored in a workshop, specifically adapted to the archery activity or discipline you plan to practice. They are often cut to match your draw length and come with points of a specific weight in grains, natural or artificial feathers in chosen sizes, profiles, and colors, and shafts made of carbon, wood, or aluminum, with nocks designed for the string, etc.

How to Care for, Maintain, and Carry the Bow and Arrows?
- Never release the bowstring without an arrow.
The bow is designed specifically for shooting arrows. If shot without an arrow, all the energy that should be transferred to the arrow is directed towards the string, limbs, and the bow body, which can cause various types of breakages or misalignments. Additionally, if the string breaks, it could snap back and cause injury.
- Regularly wax the string.
The bowstring requires proper maintenance to last as long as possible, so special string wax is used to prevent it from drying out or degrading too quickly.
- Inspect the arrows before shooting.
Arrows can break or splinter, so it is important to check your arrows before starting archery practice.
- Store arrows properly and safely.
Arrows should be transported in a quiver or extendable tube that is appropriate for safely carrying them without causing damage.
- Store the bow and accessories properly.
Whenever you are in public, such as heading to the archery club, the bow (as a weapon) should never be carried outside its case or fully assembled. It should be stored in a case, bag, or backpack designed for carrying the bow, quiver, and other accessories to maintain their good condition.
- Do not lean the bow against a wall or leave it on the floor.
To prevent the bow from falling or to protect it from the dampness of the ground, using a bow stand for recurve or compound bows is very useful.
