Guide to Beginner and Recreational Bows for Starters with Their Accessories

Beginner and recreational bows for kids and adults are ideal for starting archery, as being able to shoot with the appropriate power for each archer is important, especially when just starting. Trying to draw a bow with more power than we are prepared for will cause our arms to shake, and as a result, the shot will be less accurate, we will tire quickly, and in some cases, we could injure ourselves from overexertion.

Complete Beginner Bow Kits for Adults and Kids

We have prepared different kits for anyone who wishes to start in the world of archery and is not yet familiar with the necessary equipment to shoot a bow. With these complete bow kits, you will be able to practice archery safely and effectively.

What should you know before buying a beginner bow?

First of all, to buy a beginner bow, you need to know two things: your draw length and your draw weight, in order to choose the right length and power. In traditional one-piece bows, we will only focus on the draw weight as the length is standard. To determine these two characteristics, you need to follow these two methods:

DRAW WEIGHT

The draw weight is usually between 20 and 26 pounds for beginner archers. If you consider yourself much stronger or weaker, you should subtract or add 2-4 pounds to the recommended minimum or maximum.

It is important to use an appropriate draw weight for each archer’s experience. An unsuitable draw weight can lead to potential injuries, increased difficulty in learning, and possible frustration for the novice archer.

DRAW LENGTH

The draw length is measured with your arms extended in a “T” shape, meaning both arms extended at shoulder height, without over-stretching. Naturally. Have a partner measure the distance from the tip of the middle finger on one hand to the tip of the middle finger on the other. Then, divide that distance by 2.5 and convert it to inches (by dividing the result by 2.54).

Once the draw length is determined, we can compare it with the recommended bow length for both recurve bows and longbows.

Beginner Bows for Adults and Kids

The beginner and recreational bows for adults and kids that we have are of the compound type (body and limbs) and monoblock (one-piece) designs, and even some pulley bows. These bows are specially designed for anyone who wants to start archery, for schools, clubs, and other recreational activities.

Risers and Limbs for Beginner Bows

The riser in takedown bows has ILF-type or screw-threaded fittings and is approximately 20 to 25 inches in size, depending on the size that best suits the archer and the riser model.

The limbs, in the case of bows composed of a riser and limbs, have limbs that can be assembled with the riser using an ILF-type or screw-threaded fitting. For beginner archery limbs, draw weights typically range from 18 to 28 pounds. And the best part is that they can be replaced with limbs of higher draw weights as we gain strength and want to increase power.

Arrows for Beginner Bows

The arrows used in beginner archery are typically made of carbon due to their price/quality ratio and are designed for draw weights under 30 pounds, suitable for bows with draw weights of less than 30 pounds. The arrow tips are precision-made, as well as the plastic nocks, and the fletchings are usually artificial.

Before choosing an arrow, we must know the draw weight of our bow, and once we know that, we can refer to the different SPINE charts provided by the manufacturer with the brand and model of the arrow.

Strings for Beginner Bows

The strings currently used for archery are typically made from Dacron, FF+, Dynagen, Dacrogen, DCY, and other high-strength synthetic materials. However, the strings recommended for beginner bows are Dacron strings due to their greater elasticity. High-performance strings are not recommended for beginner bows as they could break or damage the bow.

Finger Tab or Glove

The finger tab or glove for archery is important when gripping, drawing, and releasing the string. During the draw and release process, a finger tab or glove helps prevent injury to the fingers and provides a more secure grip on the string.

Arrow Rests

The basic arrow rest for beginner bows is usually made of plastic and serves to hold the arrow in place when preparing to shoot. The basic arrow rests we can find are either of the standard type or the mat type for more traditional bows.

Waist or Back Quiver

Waist and back quivers for beginners are typically made from synthetic materials and fibers due to their good price-to-quality ratio. They are used to store arrows safely while shooting with a bow. There are two types of quivers: one that hangs on the back and another that hangs on the waist. Additionally, they can be either synthetic or traditional (made of leather or hide).

Transport Bags and Backpacks

The bow bag or backpack is an essential item for transporting and keeping the bow in perfect condition, as well as for storing all the accessories and equipment comfortably. There are different types of bags, backpacks, and travel cases, each suitable for a specific type of bow.

Bow Stringer

The bow stringer is used for any bow that needs to be strung, such as one-piece bows or bows with a riser and limbs. These bows need to be drawn with a string, and this process can be easily done with a bow stringer by placing it from one end of the limbs to the other and using the force exerted to bend the limbs. If a bow is kept strung all the time, it can affect the limbs, causing them to lose power. Additionally, a bow should not be carried strung; it should only be strung when we are going to shoot at our archery club, which is a designated and certified area for such activity.
